learner forever
In my travels on the web, I came across this interesting blogpost that talks about mathcasts. Essentially, a mathcast is a screen recording + voice from an interactive whiteboard. There are some examples on the blogpost.
It is easy to see how such mathcasts can be very useful for students who may have missed a lesson or for students to use when reviewing previously learnt material before an exam. Specially, for mathematics, where it is important to be able to see the working and/or setting out of a solution.
If we have the technology in the schools we work in, I’d love to try out mathcasts. I can already picture how I could pre-record my lessons for when I am away on holiday

Thanks for the pingback and I’m glad you enjoyed my blogpost. Even if you don’t have a lot of technology available, there are many free tools out there. Good luck!

Patty and her students have done truly extraordinary things with mathcasts, etc. Her mathcasts webpage (http://www.woodlandschools.org/index.php?q=node/741 on her school’s website) has links to about 200 mathcasts by Patty and her students for math topics from algebra through calculus so it’s an incredible resource and ePortfolio of work.

Patty, I would love to try out mathcasts but at present it is only an aspiration as I am yet to see/use an interactive whiteboard
Our uni has recently acquired one, so I plan to try and get familiar with the technology before I join the workforce.

Tim: Yes, I continue to be amazed by (and grateful for) the wealth of resources available to us on the internet, made possible by the enterprising work of people such as Patty and their generoristy in sharing their work with others.

I found an interesting article on Mathcasts too in the Journal “Learning and Leading with Technology” 36(1) Aug 2008 entitled “Mathcasts:Show-and-tell Math Concepts” by Fahlberg-Stojanovska, Fahlberg & King. There is a link in my blog.
